What Satoshi Kon: The Illusionist Is About
The documentary draws a portrait of the Japanese director Satoshi Kon and looks closely at the work he left. The account takes the films one by one and shows through examples the choices that made him recognisable: the editing, the passages between dream and waking, the breaking of time. Among those who speak are Japanese, French and American directors, each describing where his influence shows in their own work. The film is built as an introduction and as a tribute at once; it carries admiration rather than critical distance, and it is worth watching knowing that. Pascal-Alex Vincent’s eighty one minute French documentary was completed in 2021.
