Saturday With Dad

Monty Tiwa's 2016 Indonesian film follows Gunawan, who learns he has a year to live. He records video messages for his two small sons to watch years later. The film is mainly about the sons as adults. Satya and Cakra have built different lives; one struggles at being a father, the other at forming attachments. As the videos cut in, the narrative sets past against present. It is adapted from a novel. The tone is emotional and the music heavy. Ira Wibowo, as the mother, carries a second line through the story. Who it's for: those who like family drama and stories across generations. Who it's not for: viewers uncomfortable with emotional emphasis; the film makes it openly.
