What Savannah Smiles Is About
Savannah, the small daughter of a politician, runs away because nobody at home pays her any attention, and hides in the back of a car belonging to two not very capable crooks. By the time they notice her it is too late: the entire country is hunting them for kidnapping. Nobody took the girl. She left. Pierre De Moro's 1982 film runs not on the fear of abduction but on the question of where an ignored child finds attention. The two petty criminals turn into parents without meaning to. Bridgette Andersen plays Savannah, and everything that works in this well-liked but half-forgotten piece of 1980s family cinema comes from how natural she is.
