What Saving Banksy Is About

In April 2010 Banksy left work on several walls in San Francisco. One of them was a rat, and the owner of the building it was on decided to cut it out of the wall. The documentary follows that rat. A collector buys it so that it will not be sold on, and tries to give it to museums; the museums will not take it. In New York there is a gallerist whose business is removing Banksy pieces from the street and selling them, and he wants the rat. Colin Day directs; eighty minutes. The film's question is what happens when work left free on a street is cut off the wall and sold. The street artists who speak say it destroys the reason the work exists. The other side says that if it is not removed it will be painted over or demolished anyway. Banksy is not in the film and says nothing about any of it.
