What Saving Mr. Wu Is About
A Hong Kong film star is kidnapped in Beijing. The police assemble a team at once, but they have twenty hours; when the ransom deadline passes the man will be killed. The film runs in two places at the same time: the room where the hostage is held and the search going on outside. Ding Sheng directed and Andy Lau plays the abducted man. It comes from a real case, the 2004 kidnapping of the actor Wu Ruofu in Beijing. Wu himself appears in the film as a police officer. It does not run in order, and builds tension by withholding information.
