What Sea of Shadows Is About

The vaquita is the smallest whale in the world and it is going extinct. Not directly because of itself: Mexican cartels and the Chinese mafia are fishing the totoaba in the Gulf of California, whose swim bladder sells for a fortune in China and is known as the cocaine of the sea. The nets that catch totoaba drown vaquitas too, and only a handful of the animals remain. The film follows environmental activists, the Mexican navy and undercover investigators. Richard Ladkani's documentary won the World Cinema Documentary audience award at Sundance in 2019 and was bought by National Geographic, with Leonardo DiCaprio's company among the producers. What it delivers is not a nature film but an organised crime case file.
