What The Devil's Miner Is About
The documentary follows Basilio, fourteen years old, who works in a silver mine in Bolivia. To support his family the boy goes down into the pit, and there, following the custom of the miners, he makes offerings to the figure held to own the underground; it is something done for protection. The film does not treat child labour as a curiosity; it shows how a day divided between school and the mine passes. The account rests on Basilio’s own words and asks what it means for such decisions to fall to children. The account presents the boy neither as a hero nor as a victim; it lets him tell his own life. The eighty two minute documentary by Richard Ladkani and Kief Davidson was completed in 2005.
