What The Ivory Game Is About
Elephants killed for their tusks in Africa, the markets in China and Hong Kong, and the trafficking network that connects the two. The documentary follows activists, intelligence operatives and park rangers working undercover across sixteen months, and in some scenes the crew is genuinely in danger. The warning is blunt: at the current rate, it says, African elephants could be gone within fifteen years. Richard Ladkani and Kief Davidson directed, with Leonardo DiCaprio among the executive producers. It premiered in Toronto in 2016 and went to Netflix the same year. It is a campaign film and makes no secret of that. China banned the ivory trade shortly after it appeared, and how much the campaign contributed has been argued over since.
