Secret Admirer

On the last day of school Michael finds an unsigned love letter in his locker. Thinking it comes from the girl he has wanted for years, he tries to get it to her. The letter passes from hand to hand, the wrong people read it, and two marriages are put at risk. David Greenwalt directed. C. Thomas Howell plays Michael, Lori Loughlin his neighbour Toni, Kelly Preston plays Deborah. The structure is classic misunderstanding comedy, generating a chain of crises from one piece of paper changing hands. What is interesting is that although it is a teen comedy the real chaos belongs to the adults: the parents take the letter for evidence of their spouses' infidelity. It belongs to the eighties teen film template and carries all of that period's habits; some sections are uncomfortable now. It did no great business on release and became known later through television repeats. Who it is for: viewers who like eighties high school comedy. Who it is not for: anyone troubled by the period's sexual humour.
