What Better Off Dead... Is About
A high school student dumped for the captain of the ski team makes one failed suicide attempt after another. Then a French exchange student moves in next door. The film claims no realism: the paper boy pursues the hero like a thriller villain, hamburgers dance, the mother cooks something green. The narrative uses the absurdity as an exaggeration of adolescent misery. Savage Steve Holland wrote and directed. John Cusack leads and later said he disliked the film. A real warning: it uses suicide attempts as a running joke throughout. If the subject is sensitive for you, the tone will not suit.
