What Secret Defense Is About
Sylvie, a biologist, catches her brother Paul trying to take a gun from her laboratory. He tells her he means to avenge their father, whose death he blames on the man's business partner. Trying to stop him, Sylvie takes the matter into her own hands, and from there the film turns into a slow, almost ceremonial kind of suspense. Jacques Rivette's three hour picture carries the shape of classical tragedy into present day Paris, where train journeys, waiting and empty corridors matter as much as any event. Sandrine Bonnaire carries all of its weight. It rewards patience and punishes hurry.
