See the Sea

On the Île d'Yeu, while her husband is away for work, an English woman named Sasha is alone with her baby when a young woman knocks and asks to camp in the garden. Sasha reluctantly agrees. This is François Ozon's 52-minute medium-length film, released on 3 December 1997. Because of the running time it was usually shown alongside his shorts. Sasha Hails leads, with Marina de Van as the drifter Tatiana. Yorick Le Saux shot it, Jeanne Moutard edited and Olivier Delbosc produced. The film accumulates unease slowly and then opens completely into violence in its last minutes. Roger Ebert gave it three stars out of four and compared it to Hitchcock. Who it is for: viewers who like tension built at short length, and anyone curious about early Ozon. Who it is not for: those who cannot take the ending. The film is calm for 52 minutes and then withholds nothing.
