The Brazilian diplomat Sérgio Vieira de Mello worked at the United Nations for more than thirty-four years and became known as a man who went into the most dangerous places and could sit down with a war criminal, and who did it to protect the lives of ordinary people. The documentary is about his last posting, his presence at the UN headquarters in Baghdad in 2003; he was killed in the bombing of the Canal Hotel on 19 August 2003. The film builds both that day and the hours after the attack, the time spent under the rubble, out of the accounts of those who were there. Greg Barker made it from Samantha Power’s biography of Vieira de Mello, and Power appears on camera herself. It premiered at Sundance on 17 January 2009, where Karen Schmeer won the festival’s documentary editing award for it.
