Seven Sinners

On an island in the Pacific there is a bar called Seven Sinners. Bijou, the singer, has been deported from everywhere she has been; that is why she has ended up here. Navy officers, gangsters, a doctor and every kind of drifter gather in the bar. Bijou begins an affair with a lieutenant, and it is the kind of thing that could end the man's career. She is the one who has to make the decision. Marlene Dietrich and John Wayne acted together for the first time in this film; they made two more afterwards. Dietrich was rebuilding her career at Universal at the time, and the part is written exactly for her. Tay Garnett directed. The film moves between adventure, comedy and musical and never tries to be serious. The big brawl in the bar is one of the most cited scenes of the period. Broderick Crawford and Mischa Auer are in the cast.
