What Her Man Is About
A woman working in the grimy underworld of Havana sees a friendly sailor as a way out of it. Tay Garnett's 1930 film tells its waterfront bar story with a camera that keeps moving, and it is remarkably fluid for the early sound years. The freedom of the pre Code period lets it show her work and her options without evasion. Helen Twelvetrees and Phillips Holmes lead. A hard melodrama that says how fragile the promise of escape is, and says it through a finale full of fighting.
