What The Cross of Lorraine Is About
This is a propaganda film made in America in 1943 while the war was still going on, and it does not pretend otherwise. French soldiers surrender and are then put into a prison camp quite unlike what they were promised; the film shows the conditions there and the preparation for a revolt that starts inside. The aim is not to inform an audience but to justify resistance to the occupation and support mobilisation, and the characters are built accordingly, with the grey areas deliberately absent. Tay Garnett directed. Jean-Pierre Aumont, Gene Kelly, Cedric Hardwicke, Peter Lorre and Hume Cronyn are all in the same cast. What makes it interesting now is less the events than the demonstration of how wartime cinema worked.
