What Stand-In Is About
A New York bank is preparing to unload the loss-making Colossal Studios at a knockdown price, and sends its chief accountant, Atterbury Dodd, west to look the place over. Dodd knows numbers and nothing else, and the help he gets comes from Lester Plum, a former child star now working as a stand-in on the lot, and Douglas Quintain, a producer who has largely dissolved into a bottle. Tay Garnett’s film, released on 29 October 1937 through United Artists for the producer Walter Wanger, works its way through every target Hollywood offered at the time and ends with the studio’s workers rising against the closure. Leslie Howard, Joan Blondell and Humphrey Bogart play the three.
