Sharksploitation

Stephen Scarlata's 2024 documentary covers the history of shark films. The vein opened by one box-office success carried on through dozens of cheap productions. The argument is that these films had a real consequence. Much of the common fear of sharks comes from cinema; the narrative gives this alongside statements from marine scientists and describes the harm done to the species. Roger Corman and Joe Dante speak. Clips are used extensively. The tone is entertaining while the closing section is serious. Who it's for: viewers of genre film history and of conservation debate. Who it's not for: viewers wanting only the fun of the films; the documentary draws a lesson at the end.
