She's Beautiful When She's Angry

Between 1966 and 1971 the women's movement was built in America. Meetings were held in apartments, leaflets were run off on mimeograph machines, and the demands were considered unthinkable at the time: equal pay, the right to abortion, childcare, a say over one's own body. This documentary tells those five years in the words of the women who built it. Mary Dore's film does not present the movement as a single thing. What is most striking in the narrative are the internal arguments: the exclusion of Black women, the erasure of lesbian members, class difference, and the question of who was being spoken for. These are relayed from within the period rather than corrected by a present-day view. Archive footage, magazines of the time and interviews made today are combined. Most of those who speak are now in their seventies. Who it's for: Anyone interested in the history of feminism, documentaries about social movements, and America in the 1960s. Who it's not for: There are many speakers and the narrative is loose. The scope is also limited to America.
