What Shock to the System: A Donald Strachey Mystery Is About
The private investigator Donald Strachey finds his newest client dead in what looks like a suicide. He is not convinced, and takes the thing into his own hands. Albany's gay detective, with his rule-abiding husband Tim and an assistant, Kenny, who is rather too keen, follows the trail into the world of what is called gay conversion therapy. Ron Oliver's 2006 film is the second of the Donald Strachey mysteries adapted from Richard Stevenson's novels. The practice at the centre of it is real and contested; the major medical and psychological bodies state plainly that it does not work and that it does harm. The film uses that as the engine of a crime story. Chad Allen plays Strachey.
