What Silent Waters Is About
Ayesha is a widow living with her beloved son Saleem in a small town in Pakistan near the Indian border; there is something in her past she has told nobody. When the religious nationalist current in the country reaches the town, Saleem and a few other young men are taken up by it and set about pressing a strict understanding of religion on their neighbours. When a group of Sikh pilgrims arrives the tension reaches its height and Ayesha’s past returns with all its weight. The film does not tell political change from a distance; it shows it from inside one house and one relation between a mother and a son. Kirron Kher plays the lead in Sabiha Sumar’s ninety nine minute Pakistani film, completed in 2003.
