Gothenburg during the Second World War. Simon is the son of a working-class family, a boy whose appetite for books and music makes him a stranger in his own house. At school he meets Isak, whose Jewish family fled Germany. The two households grow into each other, the boys grow up together, and Simon eventually learns that he was adopted and that his birth father was a German Jew. Lisa Ohlin's film is adapted from Marianne Fredriksson's bestselling novel, with Bill Skarsgård as Simon. Sweden stays out of the war, but the fear and the silence it produces get into every home, and that is what the film is actually about.
