What Skinny Tiger, Fatty Dragon Is About
Fatty and Baldy are two undercover detectives in the Hong Kong police. They work their way inside a triad drug operation and bring in the boss, Tak, except that they do it in the middle of the police commander's wedding and are promptly put on forced leave. By the time they come back Tak has been bailed out and has hired a team of assassins to settle the score. Lau Kar-Wing's film runs the fight and the joke through the same shot. Sammo Hung treats his own weight not as a handicap but as choreography material, and the difference in tempo between him and Karl Maka is the engine of the comedy. The fights are fast and genuinely hard, and everything between them is deliberately overplayed. For anyone who likes the genre this is one of the more enjoyable meetings of the two.
