Sky. Plane. Girl.

Vera Storozheva's 2002 Russian film follows two people who meet in a café. A stewardess and a young man become attached quickly, and the relationship shuts the outside world almost entirely away. The film is adapted from a play that had been filmed before. The narrative rests on dialogue; the meetings repeat and the locations are kept few. Renata Litvinova leads and her distinctive manner of speech sets the film's tone. The images are in cold colours; the narrative follows the romantic form while avoiding emotional emphasis. The close is abrupt. Who it's for: those who like contemporary Russian drama and dialogue-driven narrative. Who it's not for: viewers waiting for an event; the film is almost entirely two people talking.
