What Sky Without Stars Is About

Anna works in a factory in East Germany, while her five year old son Jochen lives on the other side of the border with his grandparents. She wants the boy with her, and in the end she takes him. On the way she meets Carl, who helps her across the border, and the two of them become attached to each other. The film gives the divided country not in large political statements but through the road a mother has to cross to reach her child; the border here is not a line on a map but something running through the middle of a family. Eva Kotthaus and Erik Schumann appear in Helmut Kautner’s hundred and eight minute German film, completed in 1955.
