The Devil's General

General Harras is one of the best-known officers in the German air force. He loves flying, does not love the Nazis, and says so at the table in front of everyone. The regime leaves him alone because it needs him, and watches him at the same time. Then planes start going down at the front one after another. Suspicion of sabotage lands on Harras and he is briefly detained. The further he looks into it, the more he sees two things at once: who is behind the sabotage, and what he himself has been used for all these years. Helmut Käutner directs, adapting Carl Zuckmayer's play, with Curd Jürgens as Harras. A hundred and seventeen minutes. One of the first German films to try to reckon with its own recent past, and much argued about for that reason.
