What The Last Bridge Is About
Helga, conscripted as a nurse with the German army during the Second World War, is carried off by partisans in Yugoslavia who are in need of a doctor. She is caught there between two duties: the help her calling requires of her and the loyalty the army she belongs to expects. When conditions in the camp worsen and an epidemic breaks out, she has to make her decision. The film sets the war not between two fronts but inside the conscience of one person, and it declares neither side to be in the right. Maria Schell and Bernhard Wicki appear in Helmut Kautner’s hundred and two minute film, completed in 1954.
