What The Zurich Engagement Is About
Juliane Thomas is an ambitious writer with no work, and after breaking up with her lover she takes a job with a doctor friend to keep herself going. She falls for one of the patients, Jean Berner, on sight, and immediately turns the encounter into a screenplay, filling in her own fantasies about how it is all going to turn out. The screenplay reaches a film director by chance, the director happens to be Berner’s closest friend, and from that point nothing stays simple. Helmut Kautner adapted Barbara Noack’s novel, and the comedy opened in Hanover on 16 April 1957. It was shot in Zurich, Heidelberg, Hamburg and St Moritz, with Liselotte Pulver, Paul Hubschmid and Bernhard Wicki.
