Slut in a Good Way

Sophie Lorain's 2018 Canadian film begins with three seventeen-year-old friends taking holiday season jobs at a toy store. After a breakup Charlotte forms relationships with the young men there, and then notices how differently the same behaviour is judged in the female and male staff. The idea is to turn that double standard into a strike. The girls decide to withdraw from relationships for a while and the balance in the store reverses. The narrative offers this as an experiment rather than a serious thesis. It was shot in black and white and the dialogue keeps the everyday register of Quebec French. Marguerite Bouchard leads. The tone is light but aware of what it is about. Who it's for: those who like Quebec cinema and youth comedy. Who it's not for: viewers expecting the subject treated in depth; the film keeps the argument at the scale of comedy.
