What Small Town Gay Bar Is About
Malcolm Ingram's 2006 documentary looks at two bars in small-town Mississippi: Rumors in Shannon and Crossroads in Meridian. They are not simply places to drink; for miles around they are the only rooms where certain people can be in the same space at once. The film gives time to the regulars, the owners and the preachers who object, and turns nobody into a cartoon. It also travels to Alabama to remember the 2004 killing of eighteen-year-old Scotty Joe Weaver, a case that shows why the fear here is concrete rather than abstract. Kevin Smith is among the producers. It played Sundance and took the documentary jury prize at Outfest.
