The ambitious daughter of a mill owner nearly ruins her husband’s political career. She puts her own family’s interest and social advancement first, while he, known in the working districts of the town, is making a different calculation. The film gives the marriage not as a matter of love but as the collision of two different ambitions. The account was adapted from a novel and takes place in a mill town in the north of England. The mill, the house and the town hall are almost its only settings. It does not single the woman out as merely ambitious and shows the man’s compromises as well. It is among the works of British cinema of 1947 to take up class directly. John Mills and Martha Scott appear in Edward Dmytryk’s hundred and fourteen minute British film, completed in 1947.
