What Sobibor, October 14, 1943, 4 p.m. Is About
The documentary is made of what Yehuda Lerner tells. At seventeen Lerner took part in the prisoners’ uprising at Sobibor, the extermination camp the Nazis built in Poland; on 14 October 1943, following a plan that began at four in the afternoon, the prisoners killed the officers in the camp one by one and several hundred people got out through the wire. The camp was closed after that revolt. Claude Lanzmann had filmed the interview in 1979 for Shoah; years later he made it into a separate film and set among it images of Sobibor and the railway lines as they are now. The whole account rests on Lerner’s voice and the interpreter’s translation; no archive footage is used. The hundred and two minute French production was completed in 2001.
