What Sociology Is a Martial Art Is About
Over three years, from 1998 to 2001, Pierre Carles keeps his camera on Pierre Bourdieu. We see him in his seminar at the Collège de France, facing angry young people on a working-class estate, working with his students and colleagues, talking with Günter Grass. The title comes from Bourdieu’s own sentence: sociology is a martial art, a means of self-defence; you use it to defend yourself and you have no right to use it for unfair attacks. Rather than putting a thinker on a monument, the documentary records thinking while it is being done. It opened on 2 May 2001 and runs two and a half hours.
