Sofia

Sofia is twenty and lives with her parents in Casablanca. She did not know she was pregnant; one day the labour starts and she gives birth to a child out of wedlock. In Morocco that is a crime: article 490 of the penal code provides for one month to a year in prison for sexual relations outside marriage. The hospital gives her twenty-four hours to produce the father's papers, or it reports her to the authorities. Sofia has one day to find a father. Meryem Benm'Barek's first feature won the screenplay award in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes. It runs eighty minutes and the whole thing grows inside a single family.
