What Songwriter Is About
The documentary follows a British singer and songwriter while he writes a new song from nothing. It was filmed by the artist’s cousin, which is why the camera gets so easily into the studio, into the house and into the empty hours in between. The account is not after concert footage or a record of a tour; what it is curious about is how a song gets built, which attempts go in the bin, and when an idea takes hold. Being a relative is both what the account is able to do and its limit: the camera stands very close, but it keeps no critical distance. Ed Sheeran appears in Murray Cummings’s eighty four minute documentary, completed in 2018.
