What Sonic Sea Is About
The documentary opens with a mystery. In March 2000 several species of whale stranded and died in the Bahamas. At first nobody knew why. Ken Balcomb, a former navy pilot who works on acoustics, went after it. After years of effort he showed that naval sonar was killing whales. The film tells that struggle from beginning to end for the first time. It also explains what sound is in the sea: for whales, hearing is seeing. Industrial and military noise is changing that environment fast. The work was filmed across several countries, among them the Bahamas, Canada, Madagascar and Norway. Rachel McAdams narrates and Sting appears in this sixty two minute documentary by Daniel Hinerfeld and Michelle Dougherty, completed in 2016.
