What Soul on Fire Is About

John O'Leary was nine when he was severely burned playing with gasoline in the family garage; the burns covered almost his entire body, most of them third degree, and he was given little chance of living. The film follows the recovery and the life he built afterwards, drawn from O'Leary's own book. Joel Courtney takes the lead, with William H. Macy among the figures who stand alongside the boy. Sean McNamara directs inside the familiar shape of the genre and keeps faith at the centre, so it moves more like testimony than like a hospital drama. It opened in October 2025. Who it is for: viewers who like true recovery stories built around faith. Who it is not for: anyone kept at a distance by burn treatment scenes or by explicitly religious framing.
