What Sound and Fury Is About
The documentary follows the families of two brothers, one deaf and one hearing. Peter and Nita Artinian were born deaf, live in sign language and hold Deaf culture to be their identity; when their five year old daughter Heather says one day that she wants a cochlear implant, the two of them face a hard decision. Peter’s brother and his wife, who are hearing, chose the implant very early for their son, who was born deaf. The film does not try to prove either side right; it shows how the argument hardens inside a family and on whose behalf the decision is being made. Josh Aronson’s eighty minute American documentary was completed in 2000 and was nominated for the Academy Award for best documentary.
