What Sound It Out Is About
The documentary is about the last surviving record shop in Teesside. The area is in the north east of England. In the years the film was made, independent record shops in Britain were closing at a rate of one every three days. The camera stays inside the shop; the customers, the owner and the talk that goes on there make up the body of the account. Most of those who come are men, and the shop has become a meeting place for them. The film shows music not as a matter of consumption but as a tie. What is lost when a shop closes is the real subject. The seventy five minutes are spent in one place. Jeanie Finlay’s British documentary was completed in 2011.
