Your Fat Friend

Jeanie Finlay's 2024 documentary follows the writer Aubrey Gordon. Gordon first wrote anonymously and later became known through her books and a podcast. The subject is someone spoken about through her body claiming her own words. Gordon describes the medical and everyday treatment that comes with weight; rather than entering a debate about health, the narrative looks at how people behave. Filming ran over six years. Gordon's parents also appear and reckon with their own histories. The tone is warm, and the documentary does not turn into promotion. Who it's for: those interested in bodies and discrimination. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a scientific argument about health; the documentary does not take that up.
