What Orion: The Man Who Would Be King Is About
On 16 August 1977 Elvis Presley died and some of his fans refused to believe it. Sun Records turned that refusal into a scheme: they found Jimmy Ellis, whose voice was the twin of Presley’s, put him in a spangled mask his contract forbade him to take off in public, and named him Orion after a novel by Gail Brewer-Giorgio. Ellis cut eleven albums and filled halls, but was never allowed to exist under his own name. Jeanie Finlay’s documentary gives the man behind the mask his face back. Ellis was shot dead during a robbery in 1998.
