What Sound of Falling Is About
A farmhouse in northern Germany and four women who lived in it: Alma at the start of the twentieth century, Erika during the war, Angelika in the East Germany of the eighties, and Lenka now. Mascha Schilinski does not tell them in sequence; the periods interpenetrate, two eras overlap in the same room, and which year a scene belongs to is not always clear. The subject is never stated outright and what recurs is unmistakable: things done to girls in every generation that nobody will name. The image has soft edges and is nearly always overcast, and the sound design carries the real tension. It shared the jury prize at Cannes in 2025 and became Germany's Oscar submission. Who it is for: viewers who like art cinema that takes formal risks and stories of inherited trauma. Who it is not for: anyone wanting a followable structure, which the film deliberately refuses.
