What Southern Baptist Sissies Is About
The film tells the story of four gay boys growing up inside a church congregation in the south. All four hear the same teaching and meet the same contradiction: what the church says and what they feel do not match. But the ways they deal with it are entirely different; one holds tighter to his faith, one moves away, one hides himself, and one comes apart. The account holds nobody up as an example and offers no easy reconciliation. The film is a recording of a stage work made in front of an audience; its theatre form and its direct address to the audience are kept. Emerson Collins and Leslie Jordan appear in Del Shores’s hundred and thirty eight minute American film, completed in 2013.
