Spork

J.B. Ghuman Jr.'s first film opens with Spork, thirteen years old. Spork identifies as a girl and is intersex, which at school means constant mockery and exclusion. Since her mother's death she has been raised in a trailer park by her older brother. She wants the two hundred and thirty six dollar prize at the school talent show, believing the money will let her become beautiful and finally fit in. When her neighbour and new friend Tootsie Roll breaks her leg and cannot compete, she teaches Spork the dance moves of the early nineties instead. The film builds no mournful story of exclusion; with its colours, its music and its exaggeration it draws an almost comic-book world and puts Spork at the centre of it.
