What Spring and Port Wine Is About
It takes place inside the house of a working family in Bolton, in England. The father is strict and lays down rules, while the mother is gentle and tries to smooth things over. Each of the four children has a matter of their own, and the house is where those matters collide with the father’s rules. A small thing that comes up at the dinner table one evening brings out everything the family has not been saying to each other. It was adapted from a stage play and speaks from inside the English realist storytelling of the late sixties. James Mason plays the lead in Peter Hammond’s hundred and one minute British film, completed in 1970.
