What Srimulat: Hil Yang Mustahal - Babak Pertama Is About
Fajar Nugros's 2022 Indonesian film follows the rise of the comedy troupe Srimulat, as they move from provincial stages onto national television. The film takes the difficulty of that move as its subject. Humour that works on stage does not hold in front of a camera and the troupe has to rebuild its language; the narrative also gives the personal tensions inside the group. The cast play the real members. Javanese and local humour come forward. The tone is nostalgic. Who it's for: those curious about the history of Indonesian comedy. Who it's not for: viewers who do not know the troupe; most of the jokes rest on that knowledge.
