Sleep Call

Fajar Nugros's 2023 Indonesian film follows Dina, caught between debt, loneliness and past trauma. The habit of falling asleep on a phone call through the night gives her an escape, but who is on the other end grows uncertain. The film turns online intimacy into an element of suspense. The gap between what Dina sees and what is actually happening widens steadily, and the narrative holds the viewer inside the same uncertainty. Behind it lies the spiral of debt produced by online lending applications, a widespread problem in Indonesia that enters the film. Laura Basuki leads and the performance is its main support. Who it's for: those who like contemporary Indonesian thrillers and dramas about technology. Who it's not for: viewers sensitive to mental health and suicide; the film treats both directly in its final section.
