The source did not begin as a publisher’s book. Mercedes Ron, born in Argentina, posted Culpa mía to Wattpad in chapters from mid 2015 after repeated rejections; print followed in 2017 under Penguin Random House’s Montena imprint. The adaptation is Domingo González’s first feature, produced by Álex de la Iglesia and Carolina Bang’s Pokeepsie Films, and went straight to Prime Video. The film’s two registers are split by geography. Daylight belongs to the Costa del Sol: the Playamar seafront in Torremolinos, Puerto de La Duquesa and Las Gaviotas in Manilva, Cabopino beach in Marbella. The races and the promise of money are built there. Nick’s underground fights were shot at night in Madrid. By Amazon’s own account it reached the ten most watched titles in more than 190 countries, and close to ninety per cent of its 2023 streams came from outside Spain, with no absolute number given. That ratio says what the film is: set in Spain but not addressed to Spain, built to read the same anywhere. A good fit if you want the Costa del Sol used as a promise rather than a backdrop, the mansion and the race route weighted as heavily as the plot. Not for anyone expecting the stepsibling bond to trouble the adults in the house; the obstacle is the pair’s own stubbornness.
