In 1959 Berry Gordy gathered the best players out of Detroit's jazz and blues scene and started cutting records for his new label. For fourteen years this group was underneath every hit of Motown's Detroit era. They called themselves the Funk Brothers. Their names were not on the records and nobody knew their faces. Yet they played on more number ones than the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones, Elvis and the Beatles put together. For Paul Justman's documentary the Funk Brothers came back together in Detroit after thirty years. The film has archive footage, interviews, and new live recordings made with present-day singers. What it is about is people who made history without ever becoming famous.
