What Star of Midnight Is About

When a dancer vanishes from a theatre, the lawyer Clay Dalzell starts looking into it, and the trail runs into murder and deception. The film follows the most popular formula of the 1930s: a couple who drink, joke and needle each other while a killing gets solved between them. That formula had been set by The Thin Man, and this picture uses it openly, down to the same leading man, William Powell. The difference is the woman opposite him, since Ginger Rogers plays it entirely on dialogue, with nothing resting on her dancing. It runs on pace and repartee rather than suspense, and it is short and enjoyable. The solution is left unspoiled here.
